Re-Do Done!!!

Here it is...the second block of the Grandmother's Choice Block of the Week!

Last weekend...my first attempt at this block was, in a word, awful! Everything seemed to go wrong.

Yesterday, I made this block and it was 10 inches not 8.5 inches.

Today, I made this block again and finally got it right!  Re-Do Done! Whoohoo!

On my first attempt, my printer didn't print the templates clearly which left me guessing about the size of the pieces...never a good thing.  Nothing lined up correctly...it really was awful!  Epic failure I believe I called it!

Last week, I reprinted the template...carefully followed the instructions and made the seam line 3-3/8 inches. I cut the pieces again and every thing seemed to be going well...until...I completed the block and measured it. Ten inches...not eight and a half.  UGH!

Having the correct size template makes the world of difference I am here to tell you!!!

I went back to the Grandmother's Choice blog and read some of the comments where I discovered that the control measurement should have been made on the cutting line instead of the seam line.  Once I had that worked out, the block went together with ease...even the Y seams.  Had lots of practice with those...I did sew the block three times.  :)

Lesson:  Read the comments first! Maybe that will save me some stress!

Also, in the Quilt Room this week I worked quite a bit on one of my projects for the HO HO HO Blog Hop coming soon!

Sew we quilt

I have two mini quilts ready to bind and another quilt in the works.  I am pretty excited about them and can't wait to show you.  So stay close for updates.  You won't want to miss a single moment!

This week is a busy one.  The Studio Stitch BOM starts up again on Tuesday. I can hardly wait to see what they have in store for us.  Wednesday...hopefully yoga!  Thursday...definitely sewing while Hubby is out with the guys. I will be working on my Christmas quilt.

Hope you have a fabulous week!

Until then...

Epic Fail!

Do you know the phrase...epic failure?  Perhaps an example will be useful.

Well....I am working on the second block of the Grandmother's Choice BOW...and it didn't turn out so great.

When the Grandmother's Choice BOW first began...on Saturday morning, I would get up...head to the computer...copy and reformat Grandmother's Choice BOW into Word to save paper and arrange the post so that I could read it without my glasses...then print it...punch it and then file it in my notebook so that at any moment in the Quilt Room, I could work on a block.

I failed to print the template when I printed the instructions.  So, I had to go back to the computer...the one with the printer...and print the template this afternoon...which didn't print so well because we need to get some toner for it.

I tried to fill in the lines that were very light on the printout but some were missing altogether.  Ugh!  Still I plunged ahead. I didn't print two copies of the template despite the fact that they overlapped because there was no toner. I cut the block...recut the center because it didn't look like it would work out.

Stitched the blocks together as instructed. And when all was said and done...epic failure.  OMG...it isn't square...it isn't the correct size...the seams don't line up.  Yep!  Epic Failure!

Isn't that pitiful?  :(

I will, however, try again.  I am going to print the template again (twice) and I will measure the line on the template to be sure that it is in fact 3 and 3/8 inches...the standard provided in the instructions.  I will cut the pieces again and I will stitch them together again.

The weekend wasn't a total bust.  I did have some successes in the Quilt Room but I can't show you because they are part of the Christmas in July Blog Hop coming up at the end of the month.  You will have to wait.  I am hopeful to have several things complete but we shall see how they go.

So this week...I am hopeful to get those items for the Blog Hop finished and maybe a couple more.  There is Thursday night...Hubby is out with the buds...and Saturday...Hubby is fishing with fly fishing class...so lots of time. Hopefully my next run at this block will be much more successful.

Until then...

New Year's Goals Update!

Way back in January (can you believe that it is July!) I posted my goals and I thought now might be a good time to review that list.  After all...we have passed the half way mark for 2013. Wow!

So a little recap (original goals in black) and an update...
  • Complete the Craftsy BOM Quilt - All the blocks are done...just need to add sashing and complete the top...then have it quilted.  I think that this is definitely doable by the end of the year.
  • Complete the two Studio Stitch BOM Quilts - All of the blocks are finished...just need to decide on how to set the blocks and complete the tops.  I have one of them sketched out and know the yardage that I will need buy in order to complete.  The other one...I haven't decided yet.  And a further note...I signed up to do 2 more Studio Stitch BOM starting this month...so I guess those will go on the list to complete in 2014! Hopefully the goal won't read..."Complete the four"...{laughing}!
  • Catch Up on the Grandmother's Choice BOW - I have one block complete. :(  I can do better!!!
  • Complete the Christmas aprons for my lovely daughter and I to wear as we bake Christmas goodies in only 11 months - Nope, haven't started this.  I think the fear is the quilting part.  Yep, that's definitely what's holding me back.
  • Complete the Blooming Nine Patch quilt that I started years ago - Nope...haven't worked on this either.  This one requires some additional piecing.  The challenge here is pulling it all out and deciding where to start.
  • Complete the Quilt as You Go quilt that I started even longer ago - See update above for Blooming Nine Patch.
  • Make a Christmas Village tree skirt - (what was I thinking) I haven't even  started this one!  This one requires lots of embroidery.  I will need to buy lots of thread...again?!
  • Participate in at least 6 blog hops
    • In Your Words Blog Hop
    • Dare to Dresden
    • It's for the Birds
    • Christmas in July
  • Make Christmas gifts - Yeah!  Haven't started this either.
  • Eat better, cook more and practice yoga - I am eating better.  Cooking more...well, maybe?!  And definitely more yoga.
  • More trips to the Mountains (definitely) - Two trips in the last month and several before that...oh, and, hopefully another this coming weekend.
  • Dates with Hubby - We are having a fabulous time!

So overall...not great but then the first part of the year is really busy with work so I am excited to say that at least some of the goals are somewhat complete. It is always good to revisit goals as a reminder.

This week in the Quilt Room...I will be working on my Christmas in July project for the blog hop.  I have a couple projects in the works and if I can manage it and overcome my fear of quilting the aprons...perhaps I can have those ready as well for the hop!

Until then...

Rainy Mountain Visit

Yesterday, Hubby and I visited West Jefferson for the Christmas in July Festival.  There were lots of artists there with everything - wood, fabric, metal, glass and pottery as their media.  I should have taken more photos of the event itself but I was too busy enjoying myself {grin}.  There was rain on and off but nothing that required us to use our umbrella.

There were several artists there with wooden bowls.  I have seen these before at festivals but what I hadn't seen are the ones with the bark still attached and maybe a crack or some other type of character.  There were even colored stains.  I really loved those that were more artistic and less functional.  They were so interesting.  I am sad that I didn't snap a pic.  This might be my next art attempt.  Although I don't think I will use a chain saw.  Maybe Hubby will take on that role.

I saw this flyer in the window of one shops on Jefferson Avenue.

Independence is in the Virginia mountains.  I think it would be worth the trip just to see what fibers are available...I just wish it wasn't on Fridays.  That might be hard to swing.

After we left West Jefferson, we visited historic Todd, NC.  We took a spin through the Todd Mercantile and the General Store.  Both were awesome and so worth the trip.  We also went into RiverGirl Fishing Company where we were surprised to see....

Petunia snoring away.  Her picture is on their website but I hadn't expected to see her in the store.  Nor did I expect to see a chicken...

...or a chicken standing on Petunia.  This had all of the tourists snapping pictures.  {laughing}

RiverGirl Fishing Co is located in the former Virginia-Carolina Depot (acquired by Norfolk & Western in 1916)...outside its door is this sign. I just loved the historical significance of this.

The Todd Railroad Grade Road (was the old railroad bed) runs along the South Fork of the New River.  I bet it is even more beautiful on a sunny day when the river is clear.  Snapped this pic from the car. You can see on the opposite bank that the river (while high yesterday) was even higher recently...

North Carolina has had quite of bit of rain lately.  And more predicted for the area.

We chatted briefly with a couple and their dog.  They were planning to relocate this baby snapping turtle who got stranded in a puddle in the parking lot at Todd Island.  The river would have been too dangerous for him because the water was high and moving swiftly. Hope he finds a safe home!

We had a wonderful day in the mountains despite the rain and cloudy skies.  We will visit again soon.  Hubby is wanting to fish...assuming that the fish aren't all washed away! :)

Sorry there aren't any quilt pics.  I am saving them for the Christmas in July Blog Hop.  I have been working on my projects for a week or so now and things are coming along.  Hopefully I will have them complete with plenty of time to spare!  Whoohoo!

Be on the look out for details about the Hop.  They should be coming soon!

Until then...
